The numerical reporting system

<<< Cervical cytology

In the UK, cervical cytology is reported using a numerical classification system which codes all samples into diagnostic categories so that patients can be managed according to clearly defined protocols. This system was updated in 2013 and the current system classifies diagnoses according to this scheme:

0 - Glandular neoplasia (non-cervical)

1 - Inadequate

2 - Negative

3 - Low grade dyskaryosis

4 - High grade dyskaryosis (severe)

5 - High grade dyskaryosis/?invasive squamous cell carcinoma

6 - ?Glandular neoplasia of endocervical type

7 - High grade dyskaryosis (moderate)

8 - Borderline changes in squamous cells

9 - Borderline changes in endocervical glandular cells
